Filming plans

Every day we had filming we created a plan about the shots we would film that day and a list of the props, people and costumes required. This helped us know exactly what we needed to cover that day and how many shots we are going to get covered that day. This also helped our actors because they were prepared for the day because they were aware of their costume and what they needed to prepare that day.

Here are a few examples of some plans used during filming:

Inspiration for our music video

Shot 1 of our music video is a close up of our actress Jessica playing the piano solo. We were inspired by Passenger's 'Let Her Go' music video opening. His song shares the same themes as our song 'What Now' by Rihanna; however, just a different genre of music. When we first watched 'Let Her Go' we felt that the close up of the instruments created a softening mood for the audience but we wanted to make sure it wasn't just uswho felt like this. We showed people the ten second clip and asked what sort of mood they felt they gained from it, here is the feedback,
"I personally love the song and the video I think the opening is good because it sets the romantic, soft mood for the song before it has even begun" -Sheliesa Stewart, 18
"I think it is the music that creates the romantic, pretty opening because from the tune we establish that it is going to be a love song about falling in love or breaking up. However, I think the close up of the instruments at the beginning does heighten the soft, love emotions in the audience." Zoe Panayioti, 18
Now we found out that everyone felt the soft mood Emma and I have decided to include it in our opening.

Researching into our artist we noticed how her and her music videos have changed. Today her music is far more dark and evil; however, the song we chose is about heart break and what she should do now so we decided to focus on her old music videos, specifically 'Unfaithful'

We noticed that similar to Passenger's 'Let Her Go' on the piano solo they have a close up of the piano being played.

Despite our research into romantic song videos we have decided to no longer include this opening because when we researched Rihanna's music videos we found her openings always include a close up of her. We have decided to follow this convention instead for our opening.
Here are a couple of examples of Rihanna's music video openings:

Rihanna - Stay.

Rihanna - Take a Bow

Production schedule

Casting Notes and Location Reports

Casting Notes and Location Reports

Jessica Obile-Okwu, 17

We have chosen to use this actress as she is new to drama however has had experienced performing in aspects of modelling for various local catwalks and so has the skills needed to have a particular stance and way of acting. Also in her younger years she used to have drama lessons and so has an understanding of how to act out certain scenes.

   Chuka Okechukwu, 17
We have decided to use this actor for the male role because he has had previous experience acting in shows at Millfield Theatre. He has also attended a performing arts school for 2 years and has gained a lot of experience in acting with weekly lessons in acting. Also in the younger years had drama at school and so has extra experience in acting.

We have also decided to use extras in the making of the music video as we are going to need people for different scenes such as the boss shouting at the actress or people working in the office who she knows. We may also need extras for in the park scenes and we shall have dancers from Platinum Performing arts also in our music video.

Location Reports

Emma's House

We have chosen to use my house for shots 1-12 because when we were creating our storyboard we found it was easier to base the opening around somewhere we knew because we have a fast cutting rate and needed to know somewhere well enough to understand which shot comes next and where everything is. We think the bedroom is effective for the opening because it is exactly what we wanted for the video from the beginning. It is the ideal image we have had in our heads and we hope to portray it well in our music video. Advantages of using this location is:
  • We have easy access to it.
  • I know the location well enough for any last minute changes for example, thinking of another room to film that is also suitable.
Some disadvantages of this location is:

Enfield Town Park

We have picked Enfield Town Park as a set for when we explore her past with her boyfriend because we think it is a stereotypical scene with a couple to show their love and compassion. Plus, the park has nice scenery with the flowers and trees which will make a good shot.

School - St Anne's Catholic High School for Girls

Shots 27-28 will be filmed inside school because we think the Media Room portrays a stereotypical open office layout because of the Apple Macs and desks. In this shot she will be sitting at the end of the row agitated at work then receives an email from her boss telling her to go to her office immediately (we hope to use our Head of Sixth Form's office) to film the shot her being fired. Plus this space has very grave and dimly coloured walls which symbolised the life which has been drained out of her. The advantages of this is:
  • We know the space well.
  • Our actor should be in school at the same time.
  • We can film whenever we want if we need to.
Some disadvantages we could face when using this location:
  • The space is usually used as a quiet study area so we will have to book the space out in advance or use the people who have come to study as extras in the office.
  • There could be disruptions from other students.

The Tube

We briefly use the tube to show her sad, lonely way to work. We aren't certain on what tube line we will film on but it is likely we will film on our way to Southbank or Winter Wonderland. In order to film on the underground we had to write a letter to TFL, here is the letter we sent:

Dear TFL,

We are Media Studies students from St Anne's Catholic High School for Girls and we are writing to you on the hope of filming on one of your tube lines. As part of our coursework we need to film a music video and would like to film a small part on the underground.

We would greatly appreciate you granting us permission. Please reply soon.

Thank you,

Emma Gannon and Chantelle Walker

Millfield Theatre
We wanted to include contemporary dancers into our chorus. We are using the Performing Arts School Chantelle attends, Platinum. However, when we made our rough cut we found the contemporary dancing didn't fit in with the conventions of our music video so we have decided to cut it.

London Southbank and Winter Wonderland

We also decided to use the Southbank and Winter Wonderland as romantic places to show their love for each other and to Also we decided to film just in front of iconic stereotypical places in london so that the audience is comfortable and knowledgeable of the surroundings. Also to attract foreign audiences as the iconic images are a great attraction. We also used these locations during the night to show a contrast between what its like for them in the day and in the night.

Ballad genre research

Analysing our artist - Rihanna

Rihanna, a worldwide artist with, 6 Grammy Awards, 5 American Music Awards, 22 Billboard Music Awards and 2 BRIT Awards, is one of the best-selling artists of all time. Born and Bred in Barbados, Rihanna had a tough childhood with a drug addict as a father, and her parents marriage ending when she was 14. Rihanna grew up around music and started singing around the age of 7 with her biggest influences being Madonna and Bob Marley. At an older age she caught the attention of Evan Rogers, through mutual friends, and he took her to New York where she was then signed to their production company. In late 2004 her demo tape was distributed, capturing the attention of Def Jam Recording which is where her career really took off.

Since 2004, with music styles of all different genres, Rihanna has been reaching out to many different target audiences, beginning with her first biggest single ‘Pon de Replay.’ Right from the beginning Rihanna’s music videos contains sexual appeal as she was quite revealing in this video. During the video, Rihanna stands on a block and everyone else is around her suggesting she wants everyone focused on her. However she was not submissive, she was quite independent and courageous however there were hints of the male gaze being put into practise as the women were dancing separately to the men. In quite a simple video Rihanna had already established her style as being outgoing and someone who is looking to attract a wide target audience.

As her videos continued to progress she began to target different audience, singing all sorts of songs stretching from ballads to songs with a reggae vibe and romantic videos. In the video ‘Rude Boy’, Rihanna uses a lot of sex appeal to attract viewers however she also has an interesting cover on the video as there are bright colours and patterns and scopes where there are 3 copies of the same person. I thought this was an extremely interesting thing to do as it didn’t conform to her usual style of videos which may not have been simple but didn’t have this strength in difference.

With backgrounds of a fantasy world where she seems to be submissive to the males and there is a lot imagery of the mouth and lips. Also I thought use of words on screen was effective as she had never done this before and is made the reader wonder why the words were actually there. Also the use of her body blending into the black and white back ground was effective as it showed her face to stand out and made her the centre of attention.

Also videos such as ‘Stay’ are quite affective as this video is quite simple and revealing at the same time and it shows her letting the audience into her privacy as just being in a bath is not something which is usually shown in a music video, but its something which is done on a daily basis. This video is also an example of the ballads that she does and with the entrance of Mikky Ekko in this song the video shows the romantic story of two who are no longer together, symbolised by them both being around the same bath but with the absence of one another.

Beyonce's different types of music videos

Beyoncé Knowles began in a well-known Hip-hop band called Destiny’s child. In their past videos the genres were in the hip hop style and had many conventions such as black and white videos in videos such as 'Soldier' or connotations of having a lot of money because of shots focusing on cars, submissivness or jewellery. Many of their videos did show women to be submissive in videos such as ‘Cater 2U’, the three women allow the men to dominate them however in videos such as ‘Bootylicious’ and ‘Bills, Bills, Bills’, the women are shown as strong independent women breaking the boundaries and not conforming to society’s view of women. This is effective because of their versatility but also because it shows their viewers that they are able to sell their tracks without using sexual appeal and just with the use of their voices. Also by doing these different types of the videos are inspiring to some women and so they reach out to a wide target audience.

When Beyoncé branched out to make her own songs, she made music videos in a variety of different genres. She has worked with many directors and her music videos are not always in the same genres. For example some of her songs are ballads with videos that are mainly narrative based such as ‘If I were a boy’ however there are some songs which show off the artist such as ‘Single Ladies’ and ‘Ego’. It is effective that Beyoncé uses many different types of music genres for her video as it attracts many different target audiences. For example in my previous breakdown of ‘If I were a boy’, the video used different methods to communicate a storyline to the viewer and to help the viewer understand the  words that the artist was saying. During the video, the actions of the people show what is said to make it clearer and to emphasis meaning.

Although Beyoncé had broken away from her group she still had similarities in her videos such as the highly performance based parts in ‘Single Ladies’ as the whole video is filled with dance just as Destiny’s Child used to be. This shows the director promoting the actress and at times showing off what the artist has in terms of wealth and possessions. Also Beyoncé has different themes for her videos for songs in different albums. This is effective as it shows that Beyoncé isn’t predictable, labelling her as versatile and shows that she is able to cater for different audiences.

Rihanna 'What Now' treatment and Mood Board

Our chosen song is What Now by Rihanna

The general outline of the music video is about a woman who has broken up with her partner and is feeling lost without him. It shows her going through the day awaiting a text or waiting some sort of sign that he is there. Also this music video will be part narrative and part performance based as it goes through the day there will we shots of the actress singing the lyrics of the songs. In the opening there is going to there be a shot of a piano being played, as in the music at the beginning of the song. Then we will see her go through the day starting from when she wakes, and sees that she’s alone and sits up and puts her head in her hands as she remembers that her partner is no longer there on the line ‘tears were for the weaker days, I’m stronger now, or so I say but something’s missing.’ We then see her getting ready, possibly just putting in some earrings while looking in a mirror. Then we will use cuts between performance and contemporary dance for the chorus to signify her feelings and emotions being let out. As her day goes on the use of a fast cutting rate will show the different things which happen to her throughout the day. There will be some scenes of her in work being agitated and some of her alone on the tube, and by the end she is left without anyone to comfort her and she is lost looking for ‘where to go’, ‘what to feel’ and ‘how to cry’ as said near the end of the song. However the song ends with a performance based ‘So, what now.’

This is our mood board with all the ideas for the music video, we have out pictures of key scenes which we think will be used in our music video and we have also put some pictures of the artist as the video will be partly performance based and so it is to see the manner we would like our actress to be. We also have the words what now repeated around the page which is the idea of possibly using the modern style of putting words over the video to express what it being said in the video, and to emphasis what the song is about.

Laura Mulvey's 'Male Gaze' theory essay

Laura Mulvey theory of the ‘male gaze’

Laura Mulvey’s feminist theory of the ‘male gaze’ has a variety of pro’s and con’s. Mulvey says that women are made to look desirable as they are seen as passive objects and as submissive to the more dominant male in media texts today. However it isn’t only the males who have this viewpoint but everyone whether you are homosexual or heterosexual male or female, you are still looking at the females as desiring heterosexual pleasures. This theory was first proposed in 1975 and so some people would argue that this theory is out of date as it can’t strictly be true in today’s media. However women are still portrayed sexually to catch the attention of and appeal to a wider target audience because the media industry believes that the women cannot spread a message without the use of their feminine features. It is said that the males go through the notions of scopophilia and project their fantasy onto the female figure, whilst the females imagine these characters as superior reflections of themselves.

There are some videos which do actually show Laura Mulvey’s theory being acted out For example in this music video of Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’ we see the men gazing at the women who are acting submissive. The girls at the front are very provocative and revealing as they are using sexual appeal by wearing these white leotards while in the mise-en-scene the men are standing whilst the women are entertaining giving the message that women are merely objects. The women are wearing white and the men are wearing black which shows the innocence of the women and that they are being submissive whilst the black clothes show the dominance of the males.

This is effective because it shows Mulvey’s gaze theory to be correct. Also there are still many icons in industry’s such as music videos, who are looked at as sexual objects. Rihanna and Nicki Minaj are not only just two women who have a big impact on the music industry but they are two women who have done so using sexual appeal and the males do ‘gaze’ at them, making their intention successful in building a larger fan base. The male gaze theory is true for both artists as they both have videos which are revealing and activate the notion of the three types of looking; looking as the camera, as the audience and also as the actual character in the video. In Nicki Minaj’s song High School, right from the beginning we get an image of her standing next to a swimming pool with the camera looking up at Nicki Minaj showing her assets. Also we see provocative images of Nicki in the pool which suggests the women being submissive to men and allowing the men gaze at her through the screen. Also in Rihanna’s videos, e.g. Rude Boy where she wear shorts, low cut tops and also  the massive connotations of lips and the mouth are effective as they are also used in attracting people using sexual nature and it as if she is trying to coax the men in with her mouth. The was also many colours of red which suggests immense passion and the men which stand around are all watching her as she dances In these two prime
However, as said previously, the ‘gaze’ theory isn’t actually practical for the media of today as there are changes to society and not everything is the same as what it was before. There are now female gazes as men are made to look desirable for women to gaze and there are also gay gazes. There are boy bands such as JLS who dress provocatively to reach a wide target audience. As we can see in the image the males are wearing vests and are standing out from the crowd. The low shot is very effective as it looks as though they are looking down at their audience and it encourages the audience to actually look at the four figures standing before them. This is effective as it gives the group a bigger fan base as people are made to look at them as fanatical sexual objects and not as normal human beings

Also there are some criticisms against the theory. According to research, some people enjoy being looked at and so they’re not being submissive but are merely showing the world themselves because that’s what they enjoy doing. Also the ‘gaze’ can be directed at members of the same gender but not as a sexual reference but in comparison of body image, clothing etc. Also in the theory it is stated that the gaze is for use of viewpoint from dominant males however now there are also many dominant females in the world.

In my opinion Laura Mulvey’s theory is true and there are many icons whom use the ‘male gaze’ in their favour, however for it to fully apply to today’s society there would be some changes needed to be made to the definition of the ‘male gaze.’

Chosen Song and lyrics

I've been ignoring this big lump in my throat
I shouldn't be crying,
tears were for the weaker days
I'm stronger now, or so I say,
But something's missing

Whatever it is,
it feels like it's laughing at me through the glass of a two-sided mirror
Whatever it is,
it's just laughing at me
And I just wanna scream

What now? I just can't figure it out
What now? I guess I'll just wait it out (wait it out)
What now? Oh, oh, oh, oh! What now?

I found the one, he changed my life
But was it me that changed
And he just happened to come at the right time
I'm supposed to be in love
But I'm numb again

Whatever it is,
it feels like it's laughing at me through the glass of a two-sided mirror
Whatever it is,
it's just sitting there laughing at me
And I just wanna scream

What now? I just can't figure it out
What now? I guess I'll just wait it out (wait it out)
What now? Please tell me
What now?

There's no one to call 'cause I'm just playing games with them all
The more I swear I'm happy, the more that I'm feeling alone
'Cause I spent every hour just going through the motions
I can't even get the emotions to come out
Dry as a bone, but I just wanna shout

What now? I just can't figure it out
What now? I guess I'll just wait it out (wait it out)
What now? Somebody tell me
What now?

I don't know where to go
I don't know what to feel
I don't know how to cry
I don't know oh oh why
I don't know where to go
I don't know what to feel
I don't know how to cry
I don't know oh oh why
I don't know where to go
I don't know what to feel
I don't know how to cry
I don't know oh oh why

So what now?

When we first read the lyrics immediately the idea of a romantic, heart broken music video started to disperse. We wanted to develop this idea further so decided to research into our artist and the conventions of the artist and this genre of music. We concluded that we think this song is under the genre of a ballad and an RnB track.

Song Questionnaire Analysis

This is a survey we used to decide which song we wanted to use. We couldn't decide between 'Rihanna-Half of Me' or 'Rihanna-What Now'. We decided to create a questionnaire and give it out to our target audience to find out which song they prefer and why. We played both songs then asked them to fill in the questionnaire.

This analysis really helped us in deciding what song to choose for our music video. We had no idea of what the people we surveyed would say however it did seem that Rihanna - What Now was the preferred song amongst all 25 people.

Textual Analysis of Music Video

I am analysis the ‘If I were A Boy’ video by Beyoncé which was directed by the English music video and film director, Jake Nava. The song debuted at number two on the Uk Singles Chart, selling 64,554 downloads on November 15, 2008, showing true potential and as it spread worldwide everyone knew about this song and its video. This song is different to other Knowles’ songs as it is not traditional R&B but a pop introspective ballad and so fits into the genre of Pop. The music draws influences from folk rock through use of acoustic guitars, drums and strings. The video is generally about Knowles husband's situation actually becoming her experience, he is a police officer who takes his supportive wife for granted, and she takes on the role of a police officer and the video is played in reverse as she is first enamored by her colleague however after the reverse we see that it is actually the husband who does these things.

This video is also different because it was made in black and white which is effective because it shows that it isn’t that happens as a one off, but is something which always happens and has been happening all the time and that its universal. The lyrics may appear contradictory to the video as in the video we see a lot of the police force however in the song it doesn’t say anything about the police. However the video is giving an example of what the lyrics are talking about. For example the video shows her ignoring her phone and the lyrics say ‘I would turn off my phone, tell everyone its broken.’ I think this way of explaining the lyrics through visuals is very effective because if the video was different the viewers wouldn’t understand the exact message which was being portrayed. Also the idea of the men and women switching places to show the pain portrayed in the video was very effective it unfolded to the viewers the possibilities if it was the other way around.

The music and visuals are quite contradictory as the video is quite fast pace while the music is quite slow tempo and at points doesn’t go with the visuals. The video does change pace with the music, for example at 4:11 when everything is slowed down, the music goes back into the video with a slow pace and we see a shot of a male going down some stairs in slow motion. There are many close-ups of the artist which could show that the record company is trying to sell the artist. However the close-ups also show the emotion of what she is saying and therefore giving the viewer a deeper meaning to the story and to her words. This video relates to other videos by this artist because it has a clear story line, and has a moral for the viewers to take away with them. This video has change of image in a way because of the use of ballad to tell a story is different, as her usual style of music is in the R&B, also the use of black and white is a change of image as it is not something she usually does however it shows that she is prepared to leave a lasting moral in her viewers minds.

There is no sense that the artist is on sexual display however there are displays of affection which are used as a reverse psychology to make the viewer understand that the displays were wrong and misplaced. The music video was mainly performance based which was effective in making sure that the audience understood the visuals. The use of a narrative beginning and end was very effective because it showed that it is only a story and brought the video back to reality. This is very powerful and effective because it leaves a lasting message in the viewer’s mind that this happens all the time and that it’s not just a story but also a reality, which may have been the director’s aim.

In what ways are the traditional aspects of the hip hop genre broken or remade in the music video for 99 problems?

There are many traditional aspects of the hip-hop music video genre.  The location tends to be a party, a club or some sort of fancy location as the focus of these types of videos is to amplify the status, reputation and wealth. There are many things which contribute to showing these things. The use of alcohol is shown to portray expensive taste and to make viewers think they can spend money on anything they want.  The use of recognised brands and clothing to show the wealth are effective because they show that they are able to buy expensive clothing. Also the camera shots tend to be long and establishing to show the money involved. Close-ups to show the jewellery and assets of the artists are effective because these materialistic things dominate the video and show what is important in the video. Also the use of attractive women intrigues the audience to make people want to watch the video. However the men dominate while women dance irrelevantly in the video and the women are shown as objects which are not a good representation of females and could have possibly caused controversy amongst women. It I could also connote that these types of music videos are not necessarily for the viewings of females as it could be deemed sexist.

The use of hats and sporting attire are effective as it shows the age of the video and it possibly represents the artist being highly active. The mise-en-scene in the video is usually, expensive cars, expensive houses, money and jewellery which are again to portray the wealth of the artist and to show that they have money and are able to buy anything that they want. The videos don’t usually follow a storyline, only the genre and the artists are frequently involved. The use of low angled close-ups is effective because it shows the performer having status over their audiences. Some audiences may find this dehumanising however; this was the categorical generic for the hip hop music videos.  The songs also had specific meaning or moral and the videos mostly contributed to the explanation of what these words meant. However in some cases they didn’t correspond and were only used to show the wealth and reputation of the artist.

In the music video ‘99 problems’ by Jay Z, Mark Romanek broke down all these conventions and the video was totally different view on hip-hop music videos and gave viewers a new perspective. First of all the movie was different as it was in black and white which gave the video a retro look and made the audience feel they were looking back at the past. It was very effective in letting the audience know that they were viewing past events and it made the readers feel they were watching a true story. As the video continued the lighting got darker and darker which could represent that the deeper you get into this place of their lives the darker it gets. With a fast cutting rate, the extensive city is shown at the beginning of the video to set the scene, letting the audience know what they watching about and give them a feel of what the atmosphere is like there.

The first time we see the artist in the song we see Jay Z in the generic low angled close up which again suggests power over the audience which is something remade in the video. We also see a fast cutting rate of many different males and they don’t seem to be showing off any sort of brands, cars or jewellery but are more looking oppressed and lonely. This sort of approach would have had more of an effect on the viewers as it would have brought sympathy for viewers and would make more people intrigued by the stories behind the people. The use of close ups on the different shops, posters and road names are effective because it gives the impression that the artist needs help in their direction and possibly suggests that they worry about taking the wrong direction in life. Also the houses are not shown to be expensive and there isn’t extensive showing of expensive and branded things showing the video to be down to earth and to show that the video is not there to put on a front but more to reveal reality and truth.

The use of showing blocks of flats in the mise-en-scene is effective as it shows the lifestyle of the people who live here. There were many close ups showing what the people do in these situations and shows the beauty of what goes on in these areas such as the strong dancing and the people trying to make a statement. We also see the close-ups of different people’s lives which were effective because it shows the struggle on their faces and all these elements are different to the normal videos as they never showed what it was like and only ever showed what they described to be the good life. Also in this video the main focus wasn’t dominating men showing women to be objects and so women would feel more represented and respected in this video, therefore widening the target audience. There was still use of hats and baggy clothing though however not so much of sporting attire. More so the video shows the actual sport of basketball showing a diverse side to where they live, a place where they dance, place sports and are surrounded by music. The video does follow a storyline and shows a journey through this block and shows what it’s like where they live. I felt that the use of extreme close ups on parts of the body such as eyes and feet were effective as they weren’t the usual long shots to represent wealth and reputation but more to show the struggle and oppression brought by living in poor conditions. Also in this video there is a lot of death represented and connotations of Jesus, this is definitely different as it has a holy element which the normal videos did not hold. In conclusion I think that the 99 problems video was a contrast to the generic conventions of hip-hop music videos.

Preliminary Task

This is our preliminary task where we worked to practice our skills with the camera and to work out which shots are best for music videos. Also we had to practice the skills of lip syncing so that it appeared that the person on screen was actually singing, when in fact it was a back in track. The main skills needed in this preliminary task was the cutting/editing as the song is fast paced and we had to ensure there was a fast cutting rate and that all the shots were in an order which allowed  the viewer to understand what was going on on the screen.

Music Video Analysis 5

This video is a mixture of performance and narration as while they areperforming on stage, there are mini clips of their preparation time for the gig they are doing on the stage. This is effective as it gives an insight into what goes into creating the performances they give.

The cothes are in the casual style of the people in the video. Th location is on a stage performing the song and backstage in the build up to the performance. The colours are wuite dark which suggests the song is quite sad and possibly sinister.

The overall style of the video is quite relaxed, laidback, howeverdark and upsetting. The image presented is strong as the audience have to concentrate on both the video and the words of the song making the audience think about the meaning behind the words of the song. The target audience is stretched from teenagers to possibly middle aged people. It attracts the audience and makes them interested in the performance of the artist.

Music Video Analysis 4

This video is mainly performance based, there are three artists in this piece which their lip-synching was in time which effectively making video seem very authentic. Also the video is in black and white giving the video a vintage edge.

The clothing is typical of the artists in thevideo. They each had a different scheme of clothing however they all had the same style. Also their location was in a photoshoot studio. By revealing the location through an extreme longshot, it gave the audience an insight into what they were watching and gave a backstage feel  to the viewers.

The overall style of the video is quiet, young, fun and interestingly exciting for the viewer. The image presented is of being free to do what you want and having the freedom to express feelings, hence the revealing of the photoshoot studio. The target audience is for teenagers as the artists are current and what they are presenting is being 'wild' which tenagers tend to be.

Music Video Analysis 3

This video is mainly narrated, in the different frames we see many different things such as a man dancing on a road and some gruesome things such as a heart being placed into a male's pocket however there is constant view of a boy which allows the viewer to see all the different things he sees and goes through.

Throughout, the clothing was quite casual however the look of the people is quite native. There is no single location however the viewers can still understand because they see the continuous appearance of the young boy.

The overall style is quite ethnic and it seems that there is quite a lot of tradition implanted in the song, suggesting the topic of the sonmg is also quite traditional. In general, it is also quite a fun music video, as it brings back some people memories of when they were younger, poissibly.

The image presented is quite a calm, traditionl vybe, making the audience feel confident in the video. As it is narrated, it suggests that the reader has to pay extra attention to what's going on as there is a lot going on in the video, so they have to listen to the words extra carefully. The target audience is mainly people who are old enough to look back into their memories and teens because the song is quite catchy.

Permission Letter to record company

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am a Media Studies from St Anne’s Catholic High School for Girls and I am writing to you on the hope of you granting me permission to use a song by one of your artists to create a music video for my A Level Media Studies coursework.

The song I wish to use is 'What Now' by Rihanna I would greatly appreciate you granting me permission to use this song as it gives me a lot of inspiration into making an effective and high graded piece of work.

Yours Faithfully,

Chantelle Walker and Emma Gannon

Music Video Analysis - 2

This music video is mostly performed as there is only a small bit of narration at the beginning and end.

The clothes are just of casual wear which lets the reader know that they are of the modern day. The location is quite significant because it starts in a rural, snowy area but then changes to in the middle of the sea wherea lot of people are on boats and it seems that all the people are having a good time.

There is a mixture of colours however the beginning consists of predominantly white which gives us a cold feeling at the beginning and the multicoloured boat scenes make us think that this place is quite lively and fun.

The overall style of the video is quite fun and the performance based movement makes the listener want to pay attention to what the singer is saying. The performace also makes the viewer have more fun whilst watching the performances as the dancing of the singers was quite encouraging.

The artist is trying to portray quite a strong bold image to make the reader pay attention to what he is sayin and the target audience would probably be more nearing to the younger generation of people.

Music Video Analysis - 1

This song is clearly performed as we see all the relevant singers in the frame with all their instruments and lip-syncing. This is effective because the viewers don't need to use their imagination, they are easily able to listen to the words of the song.

The clothes are used to show the style of the music and to add to the performing element. The shiny, twinkling of the jackets give to the jazzy effect of the song. The location is just in a black room and there is a scene in front of the sun with their shadows which is effective because it shows the simplicity of the video and leaves the audience to focus only on the singing.

In general the style of the video there is quite an old essence to the song in comparison to modern day music videos, however it still seems to capture the attention of new listenersof modern day.

I think the band is trying to present a retro, interesting, classy style to the listeners. I think the target audience stretches from teenagers to people in their mid 30's

Feedback

I liked it, especially the way that you slowed down the end, you emphasised the tension. And I wanted to see more, it would've been better if there was an actual explosion at the end.

Creating our logo

This is how we created our logo. It began with some inspiration from a picture of a bag of popcorn and escalated into creating the image on Adobe Fireworks. We looked at many different font sizes, colours and patterns for the production company's name however we ended up just using black for the writing and a black background. This logo is to be placed right at the beginning of our film sequence. The picture of popcorn for our logo symbolises that the movie youre about to watch will be interesting, so much so that you'll feel the need to eat popcorn.
